The Roche Family
Pat and Bud Roche opened their first store in 1952 in Roslindale. This first meat and produce store expanded in 1957 to include a grocery department. From there, the company began to grow with the opening of a store in Needham in 1959 and in West Roxbury in 1967. The growth continued with a new store in Westwood in 1970, which was the first to incorporate a “department” concept of merchandising, adding a bakery, florist, and a restaurant to make shopping more enjoyable. By 1981, Roche Bros. had expanded to five stores, opening the Natick store in 1974 and the Wellesley store in 1981.
The first company Sudbury Farms store debuted in 1980. At that time, Sudbury Farms was a new and exciting concept in the supermarket industry. It featured one of the largest bulk produce departments, a deli kitchen with a large variety of home-made quality entrees and side dishes, and a fresh fish department with exclusive rights to sell Foley Fish, which had only been available in the finest restaurants in the United States. These and other new merchandising concepts, like salad bars and prepared foods, were introduced into all Roche Bros. stores after proving successful in Sudbury Farms.
In 1988, the Millis store was built and included all the best features of the other stores and some new features as well. The Millis store was home of the Food Court, an exciting specialized department where hot and cold prepared foods are sold. This unique concept was so popular that Food Courts or Kitchen Departments, as they are now called, were added to most of its stores.
The Burlington store opening in 2001 introduced Roche Bros. to the North Shore community for the first time. In 2002, Roche Bros. replaced its 17,000 square foot West Roxbury store with a brand new 46,000 square foot flagship store, followed by Easton in July of 2003. Each store opened with the latest “state of the art” technology and merchandising concepts. In May of 2004 Roche Bros. crossed over the bridge to Cape Cod with the opening of the Mashpee location. The Marshfield store opened in July 2005, then in November that same year, home delivery was offered through the E-Commerce online shopping.
In October 2007, Roche Bros. opened our 18th store in Westborough with all the concepts of our previous stores, but offering even more selections of organic, natural and fresh products throughout the store. The company is noted for its customer service and courtesy, along with quality and freshness of product and the company has done great contributions in the community and within many food organizations. |
