The D’Amour Family In 1936, Paul D’Amour, purchased a 900-square-foot neighborhood market in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Located at an intersection where two roads converge to form a “Y,” it was called the Y Cash Market. From the beginning, Big Y was a family operation. Paul’s brother, Gerald, helped in the market. Their sisters helped with the bookkeeping and Paul’s wife helped deliver groceries by bicycle. In 1947 Big Y was incorporated and Paul and Gerry formed a partnership and together, the brothers built Big Y. The rest, as they say, is history. Big Y has thrived as a family business committed to customer service. Along the way, a new generation of D’Amours joined their fathers at the company’s helm. Together, this second generation of D’Amours is keeping Big Y faithful to its roots while growing toward the future. The design and development of the World Class Market under their leadership reconfirmed Big Y’s status as a corporate visionary with a customer-centered focus. Now a third generation of D’Amours is making its mark on the company. As in the beginning, Big Y remains a family operation. |
